Born to an Iranian and Pakistani descent, in Bedok, a small town east of Singapore, during the era of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, the gynaecologist told his parents that he would be a ‘lady killer’ because of his good looks. But as he grew up, he realised that he could kill a lady by just sitting on them. Literally.
Just like any other normal boy, Farizal grew up on comics, cartoons, sticker books and sand playgrounds. His first few heroes includes Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, WWF's Ultimate Warrior and Marty McFly of Back To The Future.
At age 4, his aunt started calling him ‘Bob’ and according to superstitious belief, naming a fat young boy ‘Bob’ would actually curb his appetite. But soon after his family and friends started calling him that, he started to gain weight. Till today, he’s still stuck with the name. What started of as a superstitious belief, is today an affectionate nickname.
An art enthusiast, he has been involved in various art festivals around the world such as Romania, Turkey and Venezuela to name a few. He used to be a theatre practitioner before he decided to pursue advertising as a career. Since then, he graduated with a Bachelor of Honours in Advertising Design from Lasalle Singapore.
He had gigs in agencies such as Bates141, JWT, Havas Worldwide, Leo Burnett, Google Toaster and now Designory and has worked on various brands such as Google, Samsung, Ben & Jerrys, Silkair, Porsche, Hershey's, HSBC, DHL, Carlsberg, Air France, Far East Organisation, Friso and Fairprice.
During his tenure in advertising, Farizal has been awarded at major shows such as the Cannes Lions, D&AD, Spikes Asia, Effies, CCA and New York Festival. His exploits in theatre and the arts have also been recognized by UNESCO Theatre Festival in Romania, Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur as well as the Internacional Del Martin in Caracas, Venezuela.
Farizal's main interest is football. During his high school days, he thought it would be a good idea to be a goalkeeper as he could block the goals due to his enhanced surface area. Unfortunately, that too stuck. But wait, he is arguably a damn good goalkeeper according to his mates, although he plays as a defender occasionally to burn some calories.
In his free time, Farizal conceptualise and direct dramas and TV shows for the main Malay local broadcaster. His latest foray in TV is a cooking drama show named ‘Lesung’ (Pestle and Mortar). Farizal also travels annually with his mates across Cambodia to do charity work such as building and refurbishing homes & mosques, installing solar panels, teaching english and many more.
‘Lepak-ing’ is something Farizal loves to do and does it very often. Socialising over a cup of teh-tarik (pulled black tea with condensed milk) as he and his mates share their life stories, is a therapeutic pastime that has seen him through the worst of heartaches and the best of friendships. Because sometimes in life, all we want to be, is heard, and it just so happens he’s blessed enough to communicate for a living.
And yeah.... he’s pretty good at it.
